Don't Ever Get Used to It

by Duane Mabee on April 4, 2019

The gospel of Jesus Christ is the most amazing thing we will ever know.  Nothing else will ever come close.  Yet, those who have been around the church world for a long time can lose the sense of wonder over all that God has done for us through Jesus.  We can, unfortunately, come to take it for granted.

We need to see the gospel through the eyes of one who has only recently come to faith in Jesus.  We need to hear the amazement in the voice of someone who is still reeling over the fact that Jesus loves them and has forgiven them of everything they’ve ever done wrong.  We need to watch the tears roll down the face of someone who has recently been released from sin and bondage, freed from an addiction, and had a significant relationship restored.

John Newton and Chris Tomlin tried to express that sense of wonder in the song Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone).  They lived centuries apart, but they both knew the wonder of what it means to be saved by Jesus Christ.  They wrote:

Amazing grace

How sweet the sound

That saved a wretch like me

I once was lost, but now I’m found

Was blind, but now I see

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear

And grace my fears relieved

How precious did that grace appear

The hour I first believed

My chains are gone

I’ve been set free

My God, my Savior has ransomed me

And like a flood His mercy reigns

Unending love, amazing grace

We should be as amazed today by His love as we ever have been.  I encourage you to spend some time thinking about what life would be like for you today, if Jesus hadn’t saved you and set you free.  If you had a rough life before you were saved it won’t be difficult to imagine what life without Him would be like today.  Let your memories move you to worship Jesus.  Maybe you were saved so young that you can’t identify any major changes from pre-salvation to post-salvation.  Then recognize that the primary reason that you are not like the worst person you know, is that Jesus stepped into your life and rescued you.

The gospel of Jesus is the most amazing thing you will ever know.  You will never know a greater love than the love that Jesus Christ has for you.
