Have you ever read or heard something so often that you become numb to the meaning or even its existence? I know that I tend towards numbness in my reading of Scripture. I often forget the power of each line. I want to highlight three verses that I overlooked and had to reassess recently, and then link them. The three verses I want to highlight are Genesis 3:15, 4:1b and Luke 1:42

Genesis 3:15, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

Genesis 4:1b, “…she [Eve] conceived and bore Cain, saying, ’I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord.’”

Luke 1:42, “… and she [Elizabeth] exclaimed with a loud cry, ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me?’”

I was struck by the cry of Eve. God cursed the serpent one chapter back. I do not know exactly how long it took for Eve to conceive a child but look again at the excitement. It seems to me that she was certain that this was the seed that would destroy the serpent and the curse. We know that Cain actually kills his brother and allows the serpent’s cursed power to remain and even thrive within him. And we know that the curse in the garden does not get fulfilled for many generations, millennia even. God prophesied about the Christ in Genesis, while Eve focused on childbearing. Christ’s arrival in the flesh is prophesied about by Elizabeth, while Mary focused on her dream. Two women separated by millennia crying out with excitement for the expectation of a broken curse.

The point here is twofold. First, we must remember to not become accustomed to the Scriptures, lest they lose power in our lives. Secondly, look at what God did. Our current circumstances might not be redeemed in our lifetime at all, but our God is the God of the Long Game. He has eternal perspective, where we are incapable of seeing. He has eternal power, where we are impotent and found wanting. He has eternal love, where we are limited. Rely on Him, lest you forget the power He has to redeem all things.
