The Most Important Ingredientby Duane Mabee on June 7, 2018
The founder of the Renovate National Church Revitalization Conference, Tom Cheyney, says “People ask me all the time what is the key ingredient to church revitalization. Most want a magic pill that will fix their dying church with little or no effort. But without a doubt the single most important ingredient to renewal is the power that comes from intercessory prayer.” Lee Kricher quoted Cheyney in his book For a New Generation and then added, “All lasting change and revitalization begins as we acknowledge our dependence on God and ask Him to do what only He can do.”
I agree with Cheyney and Kricher. More importantly, so does the New Testament. Without the direct involvement of Jesus, we cannot accomplish anything of eternal value. Plus, as we work to make North River an effective tool in God’s hands we will draw the ire of the enemy. He and his minions will do whatever they can to try to shut down our progress and keep us from becoming effective in advancing Christ’s kingdom. We don’t need to be afraid of it, but he will generally start by attacking the leadership of the church.
We are in a spiritual battle, and in a battle, you always try to take out the leadership. That does the greatest amount of damage to the enemy and the enemy’s battle plans. That is why we held an Armorbearer Sunday on May 20. It was a call for each of us to take strategic positions of prayer around our church and around the leaders of our church. We asked each person to make a commitment to pray once a day for a year for myself and Karla as I pastor the church. We also asked each person to commit to pray for one other church leader each day. Pray for God’s protection. Pray for boldness and clarity to make the Word of God known. Pray for us to have God’s wisdom and willingly follow His direction. Pray for our spiritual health and vitality. Pray for anything God brings to your mind.
If you made that commitment, I trust that you are doing your best to follow through with it. If you weren’t here, but would like to make that commitment, there are commitment cards and a prayer guide on the foyer table. Fill out the card and drop it in the offering. The ushers will make sure we get it.
The single most important ingredient to renewal is the power that comes from intercessory prayer. Lasting change and revitalization will only come as we acknowledge our dependence on God and ask Him to do what only He can do. Would you join me on the battle front in prayer? Ask God to do what only He can do for, in and through us. Would you join me in battling for the advancement of God’s kingdom here in North River, in Hixson and the region, as well as around the world? As you join us in intercessory prayer for our church and our leaders, you will fill a strategic role in achieving all the victories God brings our way.
