Why Did He Come?
by Duane Mabee on December 19, 2019
When their little Messiah Child grew into a man, He would tell us why He came. He said He didn’t come to do His Own will but the will of God Who sent Him, (Jn. 6:38). He said He came to bear witness to the truth, (Jn. 18:37) and to glorify God the Father’s Name, (Jn 12:27). He also said on a number of occasions that He came to turn things upside down. He came for judgment… that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind, (Jn. 9:39). He came to call people to prioritize their relationship with God over everything else, (Matt. 10:34). He said He didn’t come to call the righteous people – the people we would have expected; He came to call those who knew they were sinners, (Matt. 9:13).
He also came to redeem people who were lost and broken. He came so that whoever believes in Him may not remain in darkness, (Jn. 12:46), but that they instead could have life and have it abundantly, (Jn. 10:10). He did not come to be served, to live in a palace and be waited on hand and foot; He came to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many, (Matt. 20:28).
Have you let Him do all of those things for you? It’s why He came.
This Christmas, I encourage you to gaze with wonder and bewilderment at the Son of the Most High God, Who chose to be born as a “human baby bearing undiminished deity”, not just so that He could be adored, but so that He could do all the things He said He came to do. He came to redeem people who are lost and broken. He came to rescue us. Have you asked Him to rescue you?
